lyrics

When I met the girl with the golden guitar
I had never seen anything so pretty
Right away I knew it just had to be her
The way her curves fit up against my knee
Her long straight neck her golden hair strings
I just stood and stared
She wasn't a guitar, she was everything
But it was nothing compared to when the golden girl'd sing

And when my fingers strummed where they're supposed to strum
I could not play a wrong note
And the chords started to shimmer and hum
And the melodies started to float
And the songs welled up like water from a spring
They flowed out and on and on
Until finally like a river raging
And it wouldn't be long till the golden girl'd sing

There are birds whose songs are sung in the forest
Melodies that float on the air
Flying south they don't stop to take a rest
They'd rather stay up there
Wolves that howl through sharp white fangs
Whales are moaning in the deep
And country boys who can croon and twang
But they just don't compete to when the golden girl sang

And later on at the end of the hoedown
I asked her, "where you going to next?"
And after she'd had a good look around
She told me, "well, with you I guess"
And we went out together when the night was done
Into that gold morning light
I was in love, I guess she wasn't alone
And it was just like when the golden girl'd sung
